One of the most common questions we get from homeowners across the Gold Coast is:
“Why is my Wi-Fi great in one room but terrible in another?”
The internet might work perfectly in the lounge room where the modem is located, but as soon as you move into a bedroom, home office, patio area, or upstairs retreat, everything slows down. Netflix buffers, video calls freeze, websites take forever to load, and gaming becomes frustrating.
The good news is that in many cases there is nothing wrong with your internet connection at all.
The problem is usually how the Wi-Fi signal is travelling around your home.
Just today my customer in Broadbeach Gold Coast called us out because he was only experiencing slow WiFi upstairs in his home only. This is pretty common because their home is too large for a standard modem / router WiFi signal to cover the whole home. We solved this homes WiFi strength issue by running a data cable (ethernet) externally from upstairs to downstairs and installing a WiFi internet transmitter on both levels of the home. Today I’m going to a home in Nerang to most likely implement a similar solution on another two-storey home.

Wi-Fi Doesn’t Travel Through Walls As Well As People Think
Many homeowners assume that if they are paying for a fast NBN plan, they should get strong Wi-Fi everywhere.
Unfortunately, Wi-Fi doesn’t work like that.
Your modem or router sends out a wireless signal, and every wall, floor, appliance, and piece of furniture between you and the router weakens that signal.
We’ve visited plenty of homes where the internet speed beside the modem was excellent, but a bedroom at the other end of the house had barely enough signal to load a web page.
Modern homes can be especially challenging because they often contain:
- Double brick walls
- Concrete floors
- Metal roofing
- Large floor plans
- Multiple levels
- Home offices located away from the modem
All of these things can reduce Wi-Fi coverage.
One of the situations we encountered this week at this home in Maudsland was this home was very old and built like a bomb shelter. Every internal wall seemed to be solid concrete, which made it extremely difficult for Wi-Fi signals to travel throughout the house. To solve their internet issues here we installed a hardwired WiFi mesh system by running data cabling through the roof ceiling to each main areas of the home and installing a ceiling mounted internet / WiFi access point.
The Garage Problem
One of the biggest issues we see on the Gold Coast is modems installed in garages.
When the NBN was connected, the technician often installed the equipment in the easiest location available. That location is frequently a garage wall near the NBN connection point.
While that may have been convenient for the installer, it’s rarely the best place for Wi-Fi coverage.
Think about it.
If your modem is located in the front corner of your garage, the signal needs to travel through multiple walls before it reaches the areas where your family actually uses the internet.
We’ve seen homes where simply relocating the router to a more central position dramatically improved Wi-Fi performance.
Sometimes we get lucky and your home has already been fitted with data cabling that runs back to the garage which makes the job of relocating your modem or hard-wring in a different internet solution much easier. A recent customer in Pimpama from last week was lucky like this. Their home was relatively small, so once we found the pre-data cabled points in the their garage and home we re-wired the system so their modem now lives centrally in their kitchen / living room area.

Not Every Device Should Be Using Wi-Fi
Another common issue is that too many important devices are relying on wireless connections.
Wi-Fi is convenient, but it isn’t always the best option.
Devices such as:
- Gaming PCs
- Home office computers
- Smart TVs
- Streaming devices
- Security systems
often perform much better when connected using Ethernet cabling.
A wired connection provides greater reliability, lower latency, and more consistent performance than Wi-Fi alone.
Many customers are surprised at how much smoother their internet experience becomes once a few key devices are hard-wired.
Sometimes One Router Isn’t Enough
As homes become larger, a single Wi-Fi router often struggles to provide reliable coverage everywhere.
This is where mesh Wi-Fi systems and wireless access points come into the picture.
Rather than trying to blast a signal across an entire home from one location, multiple Wi-Fi units are installed throughout the property to provide strong coverage where it’s needed.
This is especially helpful for:
- Large homes
- Double-storey homes
- Homes with outdoor entertaining areas
- Granny flats
- Home offices
- Pool areas
A properly designed mesh system can make a huge difference when installed correctly.
And Sometimes Wi-Fi Isn’t The Best Solution
Recently we visited a customer in Helensvale who was experiencing lag while gaming and working from home. While improving the Wi-Fi helped, the best solution was installing a dedicated Ethernet data point to both the gaming PC and home office.
Wi-Fi is convenient, but some devices simply perform better when hard-wired.
For gaming PCs, home offices, smart TVs and streaming devices, a data cable connection often provides the fastest and most reliable internet experience possible.
We have a customer in Burleigh who is running a home office with several computers in different rooms requiring a solid internet connection. The best solution, which we implemented, was to install ethernet cabling / data points directly from his modem to his office pcs.
Before You Upgrade Your Internet Plan…
Many people assume their internet is slow because they need a faster plan.
Sometimes that’s true.
But often we find customers are already paying for plenty of speed.
The real issue is that the speed isn’t reaching the devices properly.
Before spending more money each month on a faster NBN plan, it’s worth checking whether your home’s Wi-Fi setup is the real problem.

How We Help
At Internet Magic, we help homeowners identify exactly what’s causing poor Wi-Fi performance.
Depending on your situation, the solution might involve:
- Relocating your modem or router
- Installing data cabling
- Hard-wiring important devices
- Setting up a mesh Wi-Fi system
- Installing wireless access points
- Improving coverage to sheds, workshops, or granny flats
Most importantly, we explain your options clearly and provide a fixed quote before any work begins and can implement the solution then and there on the first visit.
